現代語訳
「しゃらくさい、今出たのは米虫の精霊なのか。それはそれとして、俺が出した何だいのと振り返ると、酒、肴、味噌巻きの化け物を出すだろう。今度は何が出るかと思うところに、『鰹えー、鰹えー』と高く呼ぶ声がして、向こう鉢巻、目隠し島の腹掛け一つで中を飛んで来る魚売りが『もしよ、旦那、初鰹が参りやした』という。
しゃらくさい、肝を潰しよそば売りさえ出ない、この雪にこの寄り付いた化け物は足を洗って引っ込み、雪女もこたつで溶けている時分に、初鰹売りとは。」
「そこが化け物の何とも新しいございやしょう。なるほど、さしづめ鉄砲と言うところを、雪降りに初鰹とは。趣向は古せでもねえが、年の暮れに塩鰹じゃあねえか」と言えば、「塩物を売るような染み付いた汚い鯖売りじゃあございやせん。化け物でも勇み盛んへ買い出しに参りやしたら、初鰹が来たと何が担ぎ売りどもがばったり倒れて、喧嘩騒ぎをし、平目を踏み潰すよう、鯛が目玉を飛び出すやら大騒ぎ、別にねえ、竜宮に手合い待ちのあったようさ。ところを私が諍いなしに、お前さんに売ろうと思って引っさらって参りやした」とはん切を開けて見せるなるほど、あずま乙子だ。
「お値段にはお構いないが、値をしょうたかかろうな」というと、鰹には羽が生えて「トヒョー、トヒョー」と飛んでゆく。「やぼしゃあねえ、きの利いた化け物だ」と言えば、魚売り「これは箱根からこっちの化け物さ」と洒落て消えぬ。
英語訳
"How ridiculous! Was what just appeared the spirit of a rice weevil? Well, as I turn around wondering what I've conjured up, there will likely be apparitions of sake, fish, and miso-wrapped things. Just as I'm thinking what might appear next, I hear a loud voice calling 'Bonito! Bonito!' and a fish seller comes flying through, wearing only a headband and an apron from Mekurashima, saying 'Excuse me, sir, the first bonito of the season has arrived!'
How absurd! This would make your heart skip a beat. Even soba sellers don't come out in weather like this. These supernatural creatures that have gathered should wash their feet and retreat, and at a time when even snow women are melting in their kotatsu, a first bonito seller appears!"
"That's what makes this supernatural phenomenon so novel indeed. Certainly, when you'd expect to say 'point-blank like a gun,' instead we have first bonito in the snowfall. The concept isn't entirely new, but isn't this salted bonito at year's end?" he says. The seller replies, "I'm not some grimy, stained mackerel seller dealing in salted goods. Even supernatural beings, when they go out shopping in high spirits and the first bonito arrives, all the street vendors collapse in a heap, causing fights and commotion - trampling flounder, making sea bream's eyes pop out in the great uproar. It was just like having a gathering in the Dragon Palace. So I snatched this away without any trouble, intending to sell it to you," and opens the carrying case to show - indeed, it's a fine Eastern maiden's bonito.
"I don't mind about the price, but it must be quite expensive," he says. Then wings sprout from the bonito and it flies away calling "Twhoo, twhoo!" "How clever, what a witty supernatural creature!" he remarks. The fish seller responds, "This is a supernatural being from beyond Hakone Pass," makes this joke, and vanishes.
