こわくないばけものといふが
しゆかうにうかみつくゑに
もたれてかんがへながら
ねむりしがはりうちまげに
花かんざしごたいそうにさして
つむりのおもさうなるかむろおかもち
さげてゆくていをみたりこれはむかしの
あか本にあるしよぼ〳〵あめのふるよに
ばつてうかさきてとうふかひに出るこぞうに
にたりてめへとうふをなん丁かつてきたといへば
アイサ半丁かつてまいりんしたよサアその半丁に
なつてトヾめでたし〳〵といふ所になんぞめでたい
ばけものを出さねばならぬか此あんじにこまるて
ヲヤめでたいばけものとはしんぱんておざりいす
本になつたらおくんなんしふへ手本にいたし
ますよといふ手めへもばけならうのか
こんどのばけものはひねつたものよ
からのばけものを見せるきだ
ヲヤからのばけものなら
ちんぷんかんでわつちらには
わかりいすまい〽おれも
さくしやはするがからの
ばけものはどんなものか
しらん〽そんなちんふんかんの
ばけものよりやつぱりやわらかに
とうふのゆうれいてもおかき
なんしといふかとおもへはゆめ
さめてかつ手にとうふやの

ここに洒落斎（しゃらくさい）という
戯作者（げさくしゃ）がいた。
一番合巻（ごうかん）の
紋切り型を
逃れて、いっそう

怖くない化け物というのが
趣向に浮かんで、机に
もたれて考えながら
眠ってしまったが、針打ち曲げに
花かんざしをごたいそうに挿して、
頭の重そうな禿（かむろ）が岡持ちを
下げて行く様子を見た。これは昔の
赤本にある「しょぼしょぼ雨の降る夜に
八丁で傘を借りて豆腐買いに出る小僧に
似ていて、『おまえ、豆腐を何丁買ってきた』と言えば
『はい、半丁買ってまいりました』『さあ、その半丁に
なって』『とうとうめでたし、めでたし』」という所に、なんぞめでたい
化け物を出さねばならないのか。この案じに困って
「おや、めでたい化け物とは新版でございます。
本になったら奥さん、なんぞへ手本にいたし
ますよ」という。「手前も化けようのか。
今度の化け物はひねったものよ。
唐の化け物を見せる気だ」
「おや、唐の化け物なら
ちんぷんかんで、わたしらには
分かりますまい」「俺も
作者はするが、唐の
化け物はどんなものか
知らん」「そんなちんぷんかんの
化け物よりは、やっぱり柔らかに
豆腐の幽霊でも書き
なんしょう」と思えば夢が
覚めて、勝手に豆腐屋の
岡持ちばかりが残っている。

すなわちこの
草子の外題にし、
夢になっては
作者の
手柄薄く、
初めから
夢が覚めたは
新しいが、

Here there was a gesaku writer
called Sharakusai.
Escaping from the
stereotypical patterns
of popular serial novels,
seeking something even more

"non-frightening monsters" as his
concept, he leaned against his desk
thinking and
fell asleep. In his dream, he saw a young attendant (kamuro)
with her hair elaborately done up with
flower hairpins, looking heavy-headed, carrying
a food delivery box as she walked. This resembled
an old akahon story: "On a drizzly rainy night,
a boy goes out to buy tofu, borrowing an umbrella.
When asked 'How much tofu did you buy?'
he replies 'I bought half a block, sir.'
'Well then, become that half block!'
'And so, happily ever after.'" At this point, why must
some auspicious monster appear? Troubled by this problem,
someone says: "Oh my, an auspicious monster - that's a new edition indeed!
When it becomes a book, madam, we'll use it
as a model for something."
"Are you going to transform too?
This time's monster is a clever one.
I intend to show Chinese monsters."
"Oh, if it's Chinese monsters,
it'll be gibberish - we
won't understand it." "I'm an author too, but
I don't know what Chinese
monsters are like."
"Rather than such gibberish
monsters, it would be better to gently
write about tofu ghosts
or something." Just as he thought this, he awoke
from his dream, and only the tofu seller's
delivery box remained at hand.
This is the tofu ghost▲
▲Should be called a Chinese
monster, and so making this
the title of this
booklet. If it were all a dream,
the author's
achievement would be thin.
Having the dream end from
the beginning is
novel, but
ultimately
difficult to handle - thus
he pondered deeply
while plotting
the story.
Just then,
suddenly
from beneath
the veranda,
an arm as large
as a sumo wrestler's
extended forth.
