作者が本を書こうとして筆を取ろうとすると、これは面白いと筆の鞘を持って叩こうとしたところ、庭の飛び石のもとで消えてしまい、石となってしまった。これは九太夫の化け物か、狐狸の仕業にしては大した趣向にもならないとつぶやいていると、障子戸の外に声がして「我々は百鬼夜行の化け物なり。今宵年越しの鬼打ち豆に追い払われ、厄払いに捕まることの怖さに逃げ惑っております。さすがは作者として、年越しにも構わず化け物に思い入れのご様子ゆえ、新しい物を奪い取って拝見いたしたが、唐の化け物とのご趣向、唐の化け物はどんなものでございますか」という。
洒落斎は笑って「山海経、爾雅にその形を極めることはできず、博物志、輟耕録、太平広記、本草綱目なども詮索して見るが、さて新しい化け物もない。なんじらなんぞ新しい化けようはないか。蘇子瞻が鬼話を好んだのではないが、今宵の話とすべし」と言えば「我々も赤本の端をも見ましたが、みこしにうとうや一つ目小僧などの野暮な化け物ばかりで手本にもなりません。ちと新版の化け物もございますれば参り出ましょうが、男の間のお掛け物を恐れますれば外してくださいませ」という。これは鍾馗の掛け物にて、今ここに團十郎屋「鬼は外」という気合の声である。
洒落斎は望み通り掛け物を外し、鰯柊も挿さず、浮世を壁と見た作者の庵の内、恐縮ながらお入りください、化け物の正写しを取りにしてくれんと筆を持ち構えていれば、鎧武者一つ、組み内板に一つ（渡辺）の紋をつけ、金札を携えて現れ出たり。洒落斎「さては綱が変化よな、笹絵にしてもよろい武者とはこう風な化け物め」と言えば「先生もしちょっと
お話がございます。やあ宵の口、厄払いに化けて来る我らは、入り払い鬼箱を買いましょうと羅生門が子を呼んで通りますと、格子の内からぬっと手を出して胸倉をつかまえ『払い女を買ってくんな』と言い、つらを見れば年明きめ、『いくつになる』と聞けば『鬼も十八』と言うから『すばらしい大江山へ払っても洗濯婆にほかならねえ、とんだ化け物だ』と突き離して逃げようとして腕を見たら案の定、彫り物が【次へ続く】

When the author tries to take up his brush to write a book, thinking "this is interesting," he grabs the brush sheath to strike, but it disappears at the base of the garden stepping stones and turns to stone. Muttering that this must be the ghost of Kyūdayū, or the work of foxes and raccoons, but it's not much of a clever device, he hears voices outside the sliding door: "We are the monsters of the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. Tonight, on New Year's Eve, we flee in confusion, fearful of being driven away by demon-expelling beans and caught by exorcists. As befits an author, you seem absorbed in thoughts of monsters even on New Year's Eve, so we've come to steal something new and examine it. You mentioned Chinese monsters as your concept - what are Chinese monsters like?"
Sharakusai laughs and says: "The Shanhaijing and Erya cannot fully determine their forms, and though I've searched through the Bowuzhi, Chuogenglu, Taiping guangji, and Bencao gangmu, I find no truly new monsters. Don't you have some new way of being monstrous? Though I'm not like Su Zizhan who loved ghost stories, let this be tonight's tale." They reply: "We too have seen the edges of picture books, but there are only crude monsters like the shrine-carrier ghost, the sleepy one, and the one-eyed boy - none suitable as models. We have some new-style monsters and would like to appear, but we fear the hanging scroll in the men's room, so please remove it." This is a hanging scroll of Zhong Kui, and now here comes Danjūrō's spirited cry of "Demons out!"
Sharakusai removes the hanging scroll as requested, doesn't put up sardine and holly either, and seeing the floating world as walls, says to his author's hermitage: "Please enter, though it's humble. I'll make an accurate portrait of you monsters," and holds his brush ready. Then an armored warrior appears, wearing one crest of (Watanabe) on his chest plate and carrying a golden tablet. Sharakusai says: "So you're the transformation of Tsuna! Even as a bamboo painting, an armored warrior is quite a stylish monster." The warrior replies: "Master, I have a little story to tell.
At evening, we who transform for exorcism come around, and as Rashōmon's child calls out 'Buy exorcism demon-boxes!' a hand suddenly shoots out from behind the lattice, grabs him by the collar, and says 'Buy an exorcist woman!' Looking at the face, it's a year-old hag. When asked 'How old are you?' she says 'Even demons are eighteen,' so I said 'Wonderful! Even if you're sent to Mt. Ōe, you're nothing but a laundry hag - what a ridiculous monster!' I tried to push her away and flee, but when I looked at her arm, sure enough, there was a tattoo..." 【To be continued】
