They established these signals, set up banners, and fortified those villages day and night. On the afternoon of the 5th day, some person from an unknown province passed through Usuda and said, "A riot has broken out in Nanmoku in Jōshū [Kōzuke Province], and they will cross Yochi Pass and press forward to come here." Upon hearing "Now is the time! Here they come!" the brave young men quickly lit signal fires on Mount Inari and beat bells and drums. People from the neighboring villages of Ōsawa, Honjō-machi, Toride, Yuhara, and Otagiri all gathered at the bridge without exception, waiting expectantly saying "They should come soon now." But since this was originally a false rumor, nothing came of it. They sent two or three men as lookouts, saying "If they truly come, we shall signal again," and at the hour of the Monkey (around 4 PM) everyone returned to their respective villages. In Matsumoto as well, the above circumstances were reported from Hiraga, and as fortification, group leader Komai Hikozaemon, Itabashi Tōtō, gunnery officer Sawayanagi Tomosaburō, and 52 other retainers - 102 men in total - along with 36 bales of rice and all kinds of weapons loaded on 40 pack horses were sent to fortify the Hiraga government office, and they also patrolled other areas under their jurisdiction. In Suwa they fortified Wada Pass, and in Matsumoto they fortified both Hofuku-ji and Shiojiri passes. As the disturbances in various places were calmed, the head of the Hiraga fortification first returned to Matsumoto. In Yoda-no-shō in Chiisagata District, on the evening of the 5th day, they removed the middle section of the bridge at Nunoshita on the Chikuma River, cut the ropes of the ferry boats, and fortified the places called Ishii Kawara and Nekogase, with more [fortifications] following as circular notices arrived...
