[supervision] was delegated to the villages, and the villages took turns providing guards, changing shifts every day and night. Additionally, the prison at Iwamurada-guchi was also filled to capacity. After subsequent investigations, those who had been captured due to informants and others who were found to be without fault were pardoned. Those to be entrusted to Komoro numbered twenty-seven captured persons, who were handed over to the same magistrate's men on the 17th day of the 10th month, and departed for Oiwake on the 19th. Those captured in various places up to Sakamoto totaled thirty-seven people who were taken from Matsuidа to be entrusted to Takasaki on the 21st day of the 10th month. Since bamboo was scarce in Shinshū, orders were given to Matsuida and Annaka, and numerous round bamboo cages were made. There was an official investigation in Edo, and the disturbances in various provinces came to an end.
Crop Failures in Fields and Rice Paddies
Now, from Takasaki in Jōshū to Karuizawa, volcanic ash from Mount Asama fell, and crops were completely destroyed. Within Saku district, because the weather had not been clear since the 8th month, crops from Umaryu to Ryōaigi and the Kawakami area completely failed to bear fruit. Below Takano town, even a ten-percent yield was considered extremely good, with five-percent yields being the norm. Among these, there were mostly areas with only three-percent yields or complete crop failure. From Ueda, Matsushiro, Zenkōji, Suzaka, Matsumoto, to Echigo, there were only areas of poor harvests. Due to this, orders for universal frugality were issued to all villages, sake shops were completely prohibited, and some places also banned tobacco and other items. Rice cakes were not made at year's end, and even New Year's greetings were...
