すべて無残に焼失したとのことです。死人の件については、とても判別が困難で、噂では善光寺町だけで即死者がおよそ二万九百人余りもいたであろうとのことです。同所の町並みの旅人等は二十五日朝に残った者はわずか二三百人ほどしかいない趣の噂です。その他逃げ去った者もいますが、いずれにしても大変な事態です。塩崎村の西の方の隣宿である上田領稲荷山宿については、震災で潰れた上に出火で全て焼失し、旅人その他の即死者がおびただしいとのことですが、これも人数はまだ判明しておらず、噂では即死者三千人程とも言われています。その他潰れ焼失した宿場や村々でも当然即死者が多数いるであろうとのことです。
信州犀川については、二十四日夜の地震の時から流水が止まり、二十六日昼頃から私どもがその地を出立した際には一切流水がありませんでした。丹波島宿辺りから川上七八里行ったところに美濃路橋という跳ね橋があったそうですが、その前後の辺りで山崩れが起こり犀川を塞いだとのことで、どの村のどの方面から出水するかも計り知れません。同所の川沿いはもちろん、低い場所の村々は次々と逃げ去っています。これにより往還道には上田や松代等から役人が出張して通行止めにしているとのことです。噂では犀川の湛水により信州松本辺りが潮水のようになり、桔梗ヶ原へ水が押し開き、諏訪の湖水へ入って天龍川へ流れるだろうなどと取り沙汰していますが、おそらく山崩れの場所に十分水が溜まった上で押し切って一時に大出水するものと思われます。いずれにしても犀川のために再び流失する場所等がおびただしいことと存じます。私どもは地震により二十六日昼過ぎよりその地を出立し

Regarding the deaths, it is extremely difficult to determine the numbers, but rumors suggest that in Zenkōji town alone there may have been approximately 20,900 immediate fatalities. Of the townspeople and travelers in that area, rumors say that by the morning of the 25th, only about 200-300 people remained. While some others had fled, this was nonetheless a tremendous disaster. Regarding Inariyama-shuku in Ueda domain, which is a neighboring post town to the west of Shiozaki Village, it collapsed in the earthquake and then was completely destroyed by fire, with countless immediate deaths among travelers and others. The exact numbers are still unknown, but rumors suggest about 3,000 immediate deaths. Other post towns and villages that collapsed and burned likely also had many immediate fatalities.
Regarding the Sai River in Shinshū, its flow stopped from the night of the 24th when the earthquake occurred, and from around midday on the 26th when we departed from that area, there was no flowing water at all. About 7-8 ri upstream from the Tanbajima-shuku area, there was apparently a drawbridge called Minoji Bridge, but landslides occurred before and after that area, blocking the Sai River. It's impossible to predict from which villages and in which directions flooding might occur. Naturally, villages along the river as well as those in low-lying areas have been evacuating one after another. Due to this, officials from Ueda, Matsushiro and other places have been dispatched to the highways to restrict passage. Rumors suggest that the damming of the Sai River has made the Matsumoto area of Shinshū like tidal waters, with water pushing into Kikyōgahara Plain, entering Lake Suwa, and flowing into the Tenryū River. However, it's likely that after water accumulates sufficiently at the landslide sites, it will break through and cause massive flooding all at once.
