先量（せんりやう）とは。まづ｜本術（ほんじゆつ）を努（つとめ）ざる以前に。空眼（くうがん）《割書：俗にこれを｜目づもりと云》をもつて。
本座（ほんざ）より目的（めあて）までの遠程（とをさ）をあらまし量（はか）り。或（あるい）は｜幾里幾町（なんりなんてう）
或（あるい）は｜幾十幾間（なんじうなんげん）と｜其（その）｜大概（たいがい）を予（あらか）め知（し）るを云（いふ）。かくのごとく
して。遠近（えんきん）廣（くハう）狭（けう）高低（かうてい）浅深（せんしん）ともに。目的（めあて）までの法程（ほふてい）を先（まづ）量（はかり）て。
然（しか）うしてのち本術（ほんじゅつ）を勤（つとむ）るときは。いさゝかも差異（ちがひ）出来（いでく）る事

**先量（せんりょう）の作法について**
先量とは、まず本術（本格的な測量）を行う前に、目測（俗にこれを「目づもり」という）によって、基点から目標地点までの距離をおおよそ測り、あるいは何里何町、あるいは何十何間というように、その大概をあらかじめ知ることをいう。このようにして、遠近・広狭・高低・浅深のいずれについても、目標地点までのおおよその距離をまず測ってから、その後に本術を行えば、少しも誤差が生じることはない。この方法を用いずに、みだりに本術を行う場合には、十町を一町と思い違いしたり、十里を一里と測り誤ったりするようなことがある。
（割注：もっとも、これほど甚だしい思い違いや測り誤りはあるまいが、これは先量の便利さが莫大であることを、初学の人に知らしめるための例えである。）

**On the Compass-Based Surveying Method: Preliminary Estimation**
**On the Practice of Preliminary Estimation (Senryō)**
"Preliminary estimation" (senryō) refers to the practice of using one's naked eye — commonly known as "medzumori" (visual estimation) — to roughly gauge the distance from one's base point to the target location before performing the main surveying technique. One estimates the general scale, whether in terms of *ri* and *chō*, or in tens and individual *ken*, in order to grasp an approximate sense of the distance in advance. By first estimating in this manner the approximate measure of distance, width, height, or depth to the target, and then proceeding to carry out the main surveying technique, no discrepancies whatsoever will arise. If one neglects this method and proceeds carelessly with the main technique, one may mistake ten *chō* for one *chō*, or measure ten *ri* as if it were one *ri*, and similar errors may occur.
(Marginal note: Admittedly, errors as severe as these are unlikely to occur in practice; however, this is offered as an illustration to make beginners aware of the immense practical benefit of preliminary estimation.)
