For humans are fundamentally rooted in their Heaven-given nature, and through principles already known to them, they ever more deeply investigate these matters, seeking to arrive at their ultimate truth. A friend, Totsugen, brought three volumes of the writings of Minamoto Masahiro of Nansei and placed them on my desk. When I opened and read them, I found they were illustrated explanations of the techniques of terrestrial surveying with compass and square, entitled "Guide to Land Surveying" (Ryōchi Shinan). [The work] is well-crafted in the vernacular script to enlighten the uninformed, and its intent toward fellow scholars is exceedingly precise and meticulous. I was asked to write a preface for it.
