現代語訳
その物に格（いた）る（物に至って理を窮める）ための階梯（手がかり）でありながら、どうして遠く捨てることがあろうか。小さな善を占める者も、概ね記録に留められ、一芸に名のある者も用いられないということはない。況んや、雪の中に立ち、蛍を集め（蛍雪の功を積み）、垢を削り光を磨くほど労苦する者においてはなおさらである。ただこの一枚の測量盤面によって、大地の軸を夷険（平坦と険しさ）を一平に安んじるところに置くのである。これは離婁が縄墨を正し、公輸（魯班）が墨縄を削っても乱れないようなものと相似ているとはいえないだろうか。（それに）近いと思われる。一には、その工用（実用的な技）を善しとし、二には、故旧（旧来の友）に厚く（報いること）、三には、人の名を成さんことを欲する、その微（かすかな志）が、遂に毫（筆）をその端に落とすこととなった。以上の如くである。
英語訳
While being the very stairway for investigating the principles of things, how could one ever discard it entirely? Even those who possess small virtues are generally recorded and recognized, and those with a name in even one art are invariably put to use. How much more so for those who labor—standing in the snow, gathering fireflies (referring to diligent study under hardship), scraping off grime and polishing light. It is by means of this single surveying board that one places the axis of the earth in the peace of a plain made level, be it flat or steep terrain. Is this not similar to how Lí Lóu straightened the plumb line and Gōngshū (Lǔ Bān) trimmed the ink-line without confusion? I believe it approaches that ideal. For three reasons did I ultimately put brush to paper at the end of this work: first, I commend its practical utility; second, I feel a deep obligation to old friends; and third, I wish to help accomplish the reputation of a person. Such is my intent.
