今はむかし十偏舎うし。難波津（なにはづ）に漂泊（ひやうはく）して。
近松（ちかまつ）与七といへる頃。若竹 笛躬（ふえみ）。並木川柳（なみきせんりう）など。
いふおなし流（なが）れの人々と共（とも）に。木下陰狭間合戦（このしたかげはざまかつせん）の
浄留理（しやうるり）を作意（さくい）し。大西（おほにし）筑後（ちくご）の操（あやつり）にして。竹本
吉田（よしだ）の精力（せいりよく）とひとしく。狂言は十目（しうもく）を悦（よろこば）しめ。十指（しうし）の
評判（ひやうばん）を得て。猶（なを）もさくら木にゑりて。よに行（おこなは）るゝといへ共
予も又 其断（そのことはり）を能（よく）しるが故に。爰（こゝ）に発言（ほつごん）して
此（この）稗史（さうし）の微意（びい）を述（のぶ）はべるのみ

今は昔、十返舎一九（じっぺんしゃいっく）が難波津に漂泊していた時、
近松与七と名乗っていた頃のこと。若竹笛躬（わかたけふえみ）、並木川柳（なみきせんりゅう）など
同じ流派の人々と共に、「木下陰狭間合戦（このしたかげはざまかっせん）」の
浄瑠璃を作意し、大西筑後の操り人形で上演した。竹本
吉田の精力と等しく、狂言は多くの観客を喜ばせ、大変な
評判を得て、なお桜の木に選ばれて、世に行われるという。
私もまたその道理をよく知るが故に、ここに発言して
この草紙の微意を述べるのみである。

Long ago, when Jippensha Ikku was wandering in Naniwa-tsu,
during the time he called himself Chikamatsu Yoshichi. Together with people of the same literary school such as Wakatake Fuemi and Namiki Senryu,
he created the joruri puppet play "Kinoshita Kage Hazama Battle."
It was performed with Onishi Chikugo's puppet manipulation, and
with power equal to that of Takemoto Yoshida, the play delighted many spectators and earned tremendous
acclaim, being selected like cherry blossoms to be performed throughout the world.
I too know this principle well, and therefore speak here to
merely express the subtle intention of this popular fiction.
