現代語訳
時は天正年間、国が売り物のように酒と騒乱が巷にないところはなく、国々に両将が集まって意見を争っていた。ここに近江国安土の城主小田上総介平晴永が、威勢よく近国を切り従え、能州草香山の城を攻め取った時、道後国稲葉山の城主斎藤渋野太夫義辰は晴永の勇戦に恐れ、わざと降参して家臣大垣三郎に百五十騎の兵を付けそえ、草香山の麓に潜伏させ、小田に力を合わせよと言い含めて遣わしたので、大垣三郎はその意に従い小田に加勢して草香山の城を乗っ取った。
晴永はこのことを聞いて、「草香山の義房と斎藤義辰は親しい縁者である。しかるにその好誼を捨てて、かえって草香山の落城する時に助けもせず、我が方に加勢して共に草香山を滅ぼすことは、合点がいかない。なかなか心を許すべき者ではない」とご思案があり、三輪五郎長秀にお気遣いをお下しになり、晴永と偽って大垣三郎に対面なさしめ、何事もなく挨拶をさせてお帰しになったという。

This was during the Tensho era, when the country was like merchandise for sale, and there was no place in the streets without sake and turmoil. Lords gathered in various provinces to dispute over strategies. At this time, Oda Kazusa-no-suke Taira no Harunaga, lord of Azuchi Castle in Omi Province, conquered nearby provinces with great authority and captured the castle of Kusaka-yama in Noshu. Saito Shibuno-tayu Yoshitatsu, lord of Inaba-yama Castle in Dogo Province, feared Harunaga's brave warfare and deliberately surrendered. He sent his retainer Ogaki Saburo with 150 mounted soldiers to lie in ambush at the foot of Kusaka-yama, instructing him to join forces with Oda. Following these orders, Ogaki Saburo assisted Oda and helped capture Kusaka-yama Castle.
When Harunaga heard of this, he thought: "Yoshifusa of Kusaka-yama and Saito Yoshitatsu are close relatives. Yet they abandoned their friendship and, rather than helping during Kusaka-yama's fall, they joined our side to destroy Kusaka-yama together. This doesn't make sense - they are certainly not people whose hearts can be trusted." With this concern, he sent Miwa Goro Nagehide, who posed as Harunaga himself to meet with Ogaki Saburo, exchanged pleasantries as if nothing had happened, and then dismissed him.
