弟子川のながれにのぞみて。いのり給へは。なかれ
其まゝとゞまりて。川かみよりせきかくる水。かさ
なりつゝ。山のことくに成にけり。空海立より給ひ
つゝ。一いのりし給へば。其水天にもあがらず。地にも
つかずして。こくうのうちをながれたり。第三番
には文字（もんじ）の論（ろん）に成たり。空海一 字（じ）もあやまち
給はず。ことさら梵字悉曇（ぼんじしつたん）のみちに。自在（じざい）をえ給（たまふ）。
第二の御弟子。筆をとりて文 字（じ）を一 字（じ）書（かき）給へ
ば。其文字の中より蝶（てう）蜻蜓（とんばう）のとび出て。空のうち
にかけにけり。空海又筆をとりて。文 字（じ）を一 字（じ）書（かき）

給へば。その文字の中より大竜（りう）ひとつあらはれ
て。蝶（てふ）とんばうをこと〳〵くとりくらひて。天をさ
してあがりにけり

現代語訳

弟子が川の流れに向かって祈ったところ、流れがそのまま止まって、川上から堰き止められた水が重なり重なって、山のように高くなった。空海が立ち上がって一度祈られると、その水は天にも上がらず地にもつかずして、虚空の中を流れた。第三番には文字の論議となった。空海は一字も間違えられず、とりわけ梵字悉曇の道において自在の境地を得られた。第二の御弟子が筆を取って文字を一字書くと、その文字の中から蝶や蜻蛉が飛び出して、空の中を駆けていった。空海がまた筆を取って文字を一字書くと、その文字の中から大きな龍が一匹現れて、蝶や蜻蛉をことごとく取って食らい、天を指して上がっていった。

英語訳

A disciple faced the flowing river and prayed, whereupon the flow stopped just as it was, and the water dammed up from upstream accumulated layer upon layer, forming a mountain-like mass. When Kūkai stood up and prayed once, that water neither rose to heaven nor fell to earth, but flowed through the empty sky. The third contest became a debate about written characters. Kūkai made no error in even a single character, and particularly attained mastery in the way of Sanskrit Siddhaṃ script. When the second disciple took up his brush and wrote a single character, butterflies and dragonflies flew out from within that character and soared through the sky. When Kūkai again took up his brush and wrote a single character, a great dragon emerged from within that character, devoured all the butterflies and dragonflies, and ascended pointing toward heaven.
