よりていのり給ふに。川水にはかに火と成て。ばう
ばうともえあがる。空海立よりてしはらく。きねん
し給へば。くろ雲そらにたなびきて。雨ふり下
りて其火をけすに。もとの川水ながれたりけれ
ども。川より外には一しづくも雨ふらず。五 番（ばん）の
くらべ物に。こと〳〵くまけければ。六十人の御弟
子いよ〳〵いかりをなし給ひ。いざや空海をころ
さんとぞくはたてける。六十人は空海一人をまん
なかにとりこめつゝ。たゞ一時にとりひしがんとし
給ふに。たちまち六十人の空海に身をへんし

給へは。いつれかまことのくうかいと。わきてそれ
とはしりがたし。しはらく有て。くうかいは
たゝ一人になり給ひ。こくうにとびあがり。大日
如来となり給ひ。七ほうの大れんげに座し
給ふ。六十人の御弟子。両の手をあはせ。かゝるそく
しん。じやうぶつの。さとりに。いたりし上人を。
あなどりかろしめころさんと。たくみける。あ
さましさよ。ゆるさせ給へとさんげして。それ
よりうちつれて。御寺にそかへらせ給ひける

現代語訳

寄って祈りをささげると、川の水が突然火となって、ぼうぼうと燃え上がった。空海が立ち寄ってしばらく祈念されると、黒雲が空にたなびいて、雨が降り下りてその火を消すと、元の川の水が流れていたが、川より外には一滴も雨が降らなかった。五番の競べ物で、ことごとく負けたので、六十人の御弟子はいよいよ怒りをなして、さあ空海を殺そうと企てた。六十人は空海一人を真ん中に取り囲んで、ただ一度に取り押さえようとしたところ、たちまち六十人の空海に身を変じられたので、いずれが本当の空海かと、見分けることは困難であった。しばらくして、空海はただ一人になられ、虚空に飛び上がり、大日如来となられ、七宝の大蓮華に座された。六十人の御弟子は、両手を合わせ、このような即身成仏の悟りに至った上人を軽んじ殺そうと企てた浅ましさよ、お許しくださいと懺悔して、それより連れ立って、お寺にお帰りになった。

英語訳

When they gathered and offered prayers, the river water suddenly turned to fire and blazed up furiously. When Kūkai approached and prayed for a while, black clouds spread across the sky, rain fell and extinguished the fire, and the original river water flowed again. However, not a single drop of rain fell anywhere outside the river. Having lost completely in all five contests, the sixty disciples became increasingly angry and plotted to kill Kūkai. The sixty surrounded Kūkai alone in the center and tried to seize him all at once, but suddenly he transformed into sixty versions of Kūkai, making it impossible to distinguish which was the real Kūkai. After a while, Kūkai became just one person again, flew up into the void, became Dainichi Nyorai (the Great Sun Buddha), and sat upon a great lotus of seven treasures. The sixty disciples pressed their palms together and confessed: "How shameful that we plotted to despise and kill such a master who had attained the enlightenment of sokushin jōbutsu (becoming Buddha in this very body). Please forgive us." From then on, they all returned together to the temple.
