妻はふしぎに思ひつゝ。田公（たぎみ）をおどろかし。しか
しかとかたりけれは大にふしぎに思ふところ
に。妻（つま）只（たゝ）ならずいたはりけるが。あらたなるつ
げ有ければ。さしてもおとろく色なし。月す
でにみちけれども。さらに子はむまれ給はす。
ふしぎなりと思ひけるを。父の田公（たきみ）申給はく。
天ぢくのためしには。しやく尊（そん）。在胎（さいたい）十二 ケ（か）月 也（なり）
もろこしの尭（げう）わうは十四ケ月。老子（らうし）は又八十年
まて。胎内（たいない）にありときく。わがてうには。用明（ようめい）天
わうの太子（たいし）。聖徳皇子（しやうとくわうじ）も十二ケ月のうち胎内（たいない）

にまし〳〵けり。これみな大 聖人（せいじん）名を後の世
に残し給ふ。わか子もかやうに月をこえて。ことゆへ
なく生るゝならば。かならす天下にならひなく。
大 智人（ちにん）にてあるへしと申されけるぞ。まことな
る。かくて十一ケ月も過て。人（にん）わう四十九代光仁
天皇の御宇。宝亀（ほうき）五年五月十九日。なやむこと
なくむまれ給ふ。御子取あげ見給へは。玉をみがけ
る若君なり。父母よろこび給ふ事。更にかきりは
なかりけり。かゝりけるところに。異香（いきやう）は家（いゑ）のう
ちにくんじ。五 色（しき）の雲たれおほひ。雲のうちに

現代語訳

妻は不思議に思いながら、田公を起こして、詳しく語ったところ、田公も大変不思議に思った。妻がただならぬ様子で身重になったが、霊夢のお告げがあったので、さほど驚く様子もなかった。月数がすでに満ちたけれども、全く子は生まれなさらない。不思議だと思っていると、父である田公が申されることには、「天竺の例では、釈尊は在胎十二か月である。中国の堯王は十四か月、老子はまた八十年まで胎内にあったと聞く。我が国では、用明天皇の太子である聖徳皇子も十二か月の間胎内にいらっしゃった。これらは皆大聖人で、名を後世に残しておられる。わが子もこのように月数を超えて、何事もなく生まれるならば、必ず天下に並ぶ者なく、大智の人であるだろう」と申されたのは、まことにその通りであった。こうして十一か月も過ぎて、人皇四十九代光仁天皇の御代、宝亀五年五月十九日、何の苦もなくお生まれになった。御子を取り上げて見ると、玉を磨いたような美しい若君である。父母のお喜びは、まったく限りがなかった。そうしているところに、異香が家の中に薫り、五色の雲が垂れて覆い、雲の中に

The wife, finding it wondrous, awakened her husband Takimi and told him everything in detail. He too found it most mysterious. Though his wife became pregnant in an extraordinary manner, since there had been a divine revelation in the dream, he showed little surprise. The months had already passed full term, yet no child was born at all. As they wondered at this strangeness, the father Takimi said: "In the examples from India, Shakyamuni Buddha was in the womb for twelve months. In China, Emperor Yao was carried for fourteen months, and Laozi is said to have remained in the womb for eighty years. In our country, Prince Shotoku, the crown prince of Emperor Yomei, was also in the womb for twelve months. All of these were great sages who left their names for posterity. If our child is likewise born safely after exceeding the normal months, he will surely be unparalleled under heaven and a person of great wisdom." This proved to be truly prophetic. Thus eleven months passed, and in the reign of the 49th Human Emperor Konin, on the 19th day of the 5th month of Hoki 5 (774), the child was born without difficulty.
