中将そてをひかへてなみたのひまよりもはなれ
まいらせてそのゝちはいのちあるへき事もなし
さりなからもし一日もあるならはなにをかたみに
まいらすへきとの給へはこれをかたみに後のよ
まて御らんせよとてはなたのおひをなかより
きりてちう将にたひにけり又みやの給ひける
はけふのむまのときにはかならすにゑにそなはる
へしそのときなかんするこゑ御身のみゝに
きこえへしなをもふしんにましまさはたらいに
水をいれてをきて御覧せよくれなゐと

中将は袖を引き控えて涙の隙間から「もうお離れ申し上げて、その後は命があるべきこともありません。とはいえ、もし一日でも生きているならば、何を形見に差し上げましょうか」とおっしゃると、「これを形見として後の世まで御覧なさい」と言って、髪の房を中ほどから切って中将にお渡しになった。また宮がおっしゃったことには、「今日の午の刻には必ず煮えた湯に身を投じるでしょう。その時泣き叫ぶ声があなたのお耳に聞こえましたら、なお不審にお思いでしたら、盥に水を入れて置いてご覧なさい。紅色になるでしょう。それを印として弔ってください」と、

ますます涙にむせび泣きなさる。さて中将は泣く泣く日本へとお帰りになる。宮は鬼国へお帰りになる。中将はこのままでいるべきではないので、泣く泣く二条の御所へといらっしゃる。父、母、乳母をはじめとして、「それでも生きて帰っていらっしゃったよ」と言って喜びなさることは、とても言葉では表せないほどである。
