後塵なれば夢幻のごとくなり」と、さまざまにかき口説きおっしゃるので、中将は「それならば、ともかくもおっしゃることに従いましょう」と言って、互いの袖を絞った。さて宮も泣く泣く中将を連れて、夜の間に遥かな道を急ぎ、鞍馬の奥の僧正ケ谷へとお出ましになった。中将も涙にむせび、道もはっきりとしない。宮もこれが最後のことなので、涙に暮れてお帰りになる。

And they wrung each other's sleeves. Then the Princess, weeping, accompanied the Middle Captain and hurried along the distant road through the night, emerging at Sōjō-ga-tani in the depths of Kurama. The Middle Captain too sobbed with tears, the path unclear. As this was to be their final parting, the Princess also returned in tears.
