【38】
小人は「ハチヤ」という国である。ヨーロッパの東北の隅、北の方の氷海に至る地である。大変寒い国である。半年は昼のみが続き、半年は夜のみが続く。人の身長は2、3寸であると伝えられている。しかし1尺余りであるとも言う。中国では「短人」とも言う。これがそれである。

長人は「チカ」という国である。南アメリカの内にある。この国に隣接して「パタゴン」という国もあり、人の身長が大きい。おおよそその身長はこちらの1丈2尺という。いずれも日本の巽（南東）の方角にある。四季があり、風俗は最も勇猛で強く、弓矢を好む。その矢の長さは6、7尺である。

The tall people are from a country called "Chika." It is located within South America. Adjacent to this country is also a country called "Patagonia," where people are also tall in stature. Generally, their height is said to be 1 jō and 2 shaku by our measure. All are located in the tatsumi (southeast) direction from Japan. They have four seasons, and their customs are extremely brave and strong, favoring bows and arrows. The length of their arrows is 6 or 7 shaku.
