【Right page】 ...while digging out and rescuing those whose voices could still be heard, and trying to prevent the fire, but their efforts were no match for it. The fire intensified more and more, winds blew up from the southwest direction, and the main Buddha hall appeared to be in grave danger. Then, numerous human figures appeared on the roofs of the main hall and the Sanmon gate, running in all directions to prevent flying sparks. Though not collapsed by the earthquake nor consumed by fire, when dawn broke and people looked up at the roofs, not a single person among the many could be seen - truly a mysterious thing. The lord of Matsudai brought many firefighting personnel and came to serve. From the Rokugawa encampment as well, as follows: Shimogo-machi was the source of the fire but was brought under control. Those who survived that night all lay down in the fields, exposed to rain and dew. 【Left page】 The earthquake did not stop, the heat was fierce, it burned for two days and two nights - truly a difficult and lamentable situation beyond words. - In the temple precincts: all the various halls of the Great Head Priest's compound, 15 of the 21 priests' quarters, all 10 residential quarters - all burned down. The Niomon gate, temple courtyards, sundry goods shops, teahouses, and mat-covered entertainment stalls for about three blocks - all burned down. The head administrator's building was half-collapsed but remained. The sutra repository, bell tower, and Manzen hall were unharmed. Several hundred pilgrims who stayed overnight in the main hall every night were there, and on this particular night there were especially many, yet not one was injured and all emerged safely - a truly grateful thing. - Temple domain townhouses burned: Upper and Lower Daimon-machi, Nagano-machi, Nishi-machi
