【Right page】 Although we exhausted all available manpower within the domain and had many people dispatched from neighboring villages that might also suffer flood damage to carry out construction work with utmost effort, against this enormous flood force it provided not even one ten-thousandth of adequate defense and was swept away in a short time. Regarding the collapse of Mount Majin north of Koichi Village ferry crossing, one of the three locations where the Sai River channel was blocked by debris (as previously reported): an area approximately twenty ken high, eighty ken north-south, and fifty ken east-west was pushed into the river channel, leaving only about seven ken of remaining river width. Since leaving it as-is would cause erosion even with small amounts of water, I ordered as much excavation as possible, but this was far beyond human capability. The current flood instantly swept away massive stones that would require over a hundred people to move, pushing them downstream or to 【Left page】 the farmlands within Kawabe Village and other areas. Around the protruding area of Koichi Village, the water level reached over six jō. Within Kawabe Village, particularly in Yotsuya Village, although sixty to seventy of the eighty-some households should have remained, all were completely swept away, leaving the entire area as riverbed. In other villages, all houses that had collapsed in the earthquake were swept away, and moreover, houses from flood-affected villages in the mountain areas were floating on the water surface. Although we had tied them down, when the accumulated floodwater suddenly surged through, all the ropes snapped. Furthermore, as mountains on both banks of the mountain river areas largely collapsed, large trees also flowed out all at once, were pushed downstream by the water and crashed into houses, causing them to be knocked down and swept away in great numbers. There were approximately eight flood deaths and approximately 627 houses swept away, and
