貞元元年六月十八日癸丑、申の刻に地が大震し、その響きは
雷のようであった。宮城の諸司は多くが破壊・顛倒し、西京の舎屋は
その数が非常に多く、その中でも八省・豊楽院・東寺・西寺・極楽
寺・清水寺・円宗寺等が顛倒した。地震の激しさは未曾有のものであった。今日
《朱書：「南庭に幄を立てて御所とす」》
御輿を南庭に寄せ、幄を立てて御所とした。中宮庁前も同じく

帳を立てた。今日清水寺で地震の間に僧俗が圧死した者の数は
五千人であった。十九日甲寅、地震が十四度あった。左衛門陣後
庁・堀河院廊舎・閑院西対屋・民部省舎三宇が顛
倒した。二十日乙卯、地震が十一度あった。
謹んで考えるに、この後二十一日・二十二日・二十三日・二十六日・二十
九日・三十日・七月十一日・十二日等にも地震があり、それぞれに
度数があったが、今は煩わしいので注記しない。

七月十三日戊寅、詔書により天延四年を貞元元
年に改元した。災害並びに地震によるものである。赦令があった。
謹んで考えるに、この後十四日・十八日・二十日・二十一日・二十
三日等にも地震があり度数があった。
九月二十三日丙戌、地が大震し、その響きは雷のようであった。

十月十一日甲辰、社蕃に神宝を奉じられた。御時により願いを

○Nihon Kiryaku - Emperor En'yū
Jōgen 1st year, 6th month, 18th day (mizunoto-ushi), during the hour of the Monkey (3-5 PM): The earth shook violently, its sound
like thunder. Many government offices in the imperial palace were destroyed and collapsed, and buildings in the western capital were
extremely numerous in their destruction. Among these, the Hasshō (Eight Ministries), Hōraku-in, Tō-ji, Sai-ji, Gokuraku-
ji, Kiyomizu-dera, Enshū-ji and others collapsed. The severity of this earthquake was unprecedented. Today

who were crushed to death was five thousand. On the 19th day (kinoe-tora), there were fourteen earthquakes. The rear
offices of the Left Guards, the corridors of Horikawa-in, the western wing of Kan-in, and three buildings of the Ministry of Popular Affairs collapsed.
On the 20th day (kinoto-u), there were eleven earthquakes.
Respectfully noting: After this, on the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 29th,
30th days, and on the 11th and 12th days of the 7th month, earthquakes occurred with
various frequencies, but these are not recorded here to avoid excessive detail.

7th month, 13th day (tsuchinoe-tora): By imperial edict, Ten'en 4th year was changed to Jōgen 1st
year due to disasters and earthquakes. There was an amnesty decree.
Respectfully noting: After this, on the 14th, 18th, 20th, 21st, and 23rd
days, earthquakes occurred with various frequencies.
