刻の終わり頃に大地震が三回動いた。しばらくして一度小さく動き、また一度小さく動いた。およそ終日鳴動し、未の刻の後に雨が降り、夜に入って甚だしく、申の刻の始めに左頭中将隆夏朝臣が来て示して言うには、「院から女房の奉書をもって仰せ遣わされたことには、来る九日から三ヶ夜、内侍所臨時御神楽を行うべし、沙汰申すべし」ということであった。《中略》
院において土御門三位有盛卿が談じて言うには、「今日の地震は水神が動いたものである。天子は慎むべきであり、兵革は年内には起こらない」ということであった。また言うには、「所々の築垣などが崩れ落ちた。私もこれほど見たことがない。近来このような大きな動きはない」ということであった。

Near the end of the Hour of the Snake, there was a great earthquake that shook three times. After a while, it shook once lightly, then once more lightly. Throughout the entire day there was rumbling, and after the Hour of the Sheep it rained. Deep into the night, at the beginning of the Hour of the Monkey, Minister of the Left and Middle Captain Takana came and reported: "From the Retired Emperor's Palace, through a lady-in-waiting's formal letter, it was commanded that from the coming 9th day for three nights, the extraordinary sacred music ceremony at the Naishi-dokoro should be performed, and arrangements should be made." At the Palace, Third Rank Minister Arimori of the Tsuchimikado family discussed: "Today's earthquake was caused by the movement of the water deity. The Emperor should be cautious, but military conflicts will not occur within the year." He also said: "Stone walls and earthworks in various places have collapsed. I have never seen anything like this. There has been no such great movement in recent times."
