十三年冬十月壬辰、千人に及ぶ大地震があった。国中の男女が叫び声をあげ、東西もわからない状態となった。山は崩れ、川は氾濫し、諸国の郡官舎及び百姓の倉屋、寺塔、神社が破壊されたものは数え切れないほどであった。これにより人民及び家畜の多くが死傷した。(以下略) 天平六年  〇続日本紀  聖武天皇   天平六年夏四月戊戌、大地震があり、天下の百姓の住居を破壊し、圧死者が多数出た。山は崩れ、川は堰き止められ、地面はあちこちで亀裂し、その数は数え切れないほどであった。   癸卯、使者を畿内七道諸国に派遣し、地震で破損した神社を検分させた。   戊申、詔して言った。「今月七日の地震は異常であり、山陵を恐れ動かした。諸王・真人を派遣し、土師宿祢一人を副として、陵墓八ヶ所及び有功王の墓を検分させよ」。また詔して言った。「地震の災害は、政事に欠陥があることによるものと恐れる。すべての官僚は職事の処理に励め。今後もし改励しなければ、その状況に応じて必ず降格処分とする」。   九月壬午、大地震があった。 同十七年  ○続日本紀  聖武天皇   天平十七年夏四月甲寅、この日一夜中地震が続き、三日三夜に及んだ。(以下略)

Year 13, winter, 10th month, day of Renchen: There was a great earthquake affecting a thousand people. Men and women throughout the country cried out, not knowing east from west. Mountains collapsed and rivers flooded. The number of destroyed provincial government offices, people's storehouses, temple pagodas, and shrines was beyond counting. As a result, many people and livestock died or were injured. (The rest omitted) 6th year of Tenpyo era  〇Chronicles of Japan Continued  Emperor Shomu   6th year of Tenpyo, summer, 4th month, day of Wuxu: There was a great earthquake that destroyed the dwellings of people throughout the realm, with many crushed to death. Mountains collapsed, rivers were dammed up, and the ground cracked in many places - the damage was countless.   Day of Guimao: Envoys were dispatched to the provinces of the capital region and the seven circuits to inspect shrines damaged by the earthquake.   Day of Wushen: An edict was issued saying, "The earthquake on the 7th of this month was extraordinary and has disturbed the imperial mausolea with fear. Various princes and Mahito shall be dispatched, with one Haji no Sukune as assistant, to inspect the eight mausoleum sites and the tombs of meritorious princes." Another edict stated: "We fear this earthquake disaster is due to deficiencies in government. All officials must diligently attend to their duties. From now on, if they do not reform and strive harder, they will certainly be demoted according to their performance."   9th month, day of Rengo: There was a great earthquake. Same 17th year  ○Chronicles of Japan Continued  Emperor Shomu   17th year of Tenpyo, summer, 4th month, day of Jiaying: On this day earthquakes continued through the night for three days and three nights.
