槐記【江戸中期の随筆】享保九年の御話に云く昔四方市といへる
盲人は名誉の調子聞にて人の吉凶悔吝を占ふ
に少しも違ふことなし応【應】山へは御心やすく毎々参
りて御次に伺候せしか晩年に及ひて申せしは
由なきことを覚えて甚くやし終日人に交はる毎
に其人の吉凶みな耳にひゞきていとかしまし
と申けるよし去ほとに度々の高名挙てかそへ
かたく此四方市朝夙に起て僕を呼ひ扨々あ
しき調子なり此調子にては大方京中は減却す
へきそ急き食にても認めて我を先嵯峨の方へ

誘ひゆけと言日頃の手きはともあれは早速西
をさして嵯峨に行嵐山の麓大井源【「河」カ 注】原に着て暫
く休息して云やういまた調子なほらすあない
ぶかし大方大火事なるへしと人家有所をはな
れて北へ越せしにいまだ同し調子なるなるは
此も悪所と覚ゆ愛宕には知れる場あり是に誘
ひゆけといふいさとて又登りかくて其坊に着
く坊主出てかく早くは登山しけるよと申せし
かはしか〳〵の事ありと答ふこゝはいかにと問
こゝも猶あからす少しにても高き所へ参りたし

『槐記』（江戸中期の随筆）の享保九年の話に言うには、昔、四方市という盲人がいた。名高い音律を聞く達人で、人の吉凶を占うのに少しも間違うことがなかった。応山（皇室の菩提寺）へは気軽に度々参り、お次の間で伺候していたが、晩年になって申したことには、「理由のないことを感じて甚だ苦しい。終日人と交わる度に、その人の吉凶がみな耳に響いて、とても煩わしい」と申したということである。それほどまでに度々の功績は数え切れないほどであった。この四方市が朝早く起きて従僕を呼び、「さてさて悪い音調である。この音調では、おそらく京中は滅亡するであろう。急いで食事でも用意して、私をまず嵯峨の方へ

案内してくれ」と言った。日頃の手際もあることなので、早速西に向かって嵯峨に行き、嵐山の麓、大井河原に着いて暫く休息して言うには、「まだ音調が直らない。危ないことだ。おそらく大火事になるであろう」と、人家のある所を離れて北へ越したが、まだ同じ音調であるので、「ここも悪い所と思われる。愛宕には知っている場所がある。そこに案内してくれ」と言う。そうして、また登り、このようにしてその坊に着いた。僧侶が出てきて「こんなに早くに登山されたのですね」と申したところ、「これこれの事情があって」と答える。「ここはいかがですか」と問うと、「ここもまだはっきりしない。少しでも高い所へ参りたい」

According to a story from the ninth year of Kyōhō in the "Enju-ki" (a collection of essays from the mid-Edo period), there was once a blind man named Shihōichi. He was a renowned master of listening to musical tones and never made mistakes when divining people's good and bad fortune. He would casually visit Ōzan (the imperial family's temple) frequently and wait in attendance in the antechamber. In his later years, he said: "I sense something inexplicable and it troubles me greatly. Every day when I interact with people, I hear all their fortunes and misfortunes echoing in my ears, and it is very disturbing." His achievements were so numerous they were countless to enumerate. This Shihōichi rose early one morning, called his servant, and said: "Oh my, this is a terrible tone. With this tone, the entire capital of Kyoto will likely be destroyed. Quickly prepare some food and first guide me toward Saga..."

"...district." Given his usual decisiveness, they immediately headed west toward Saga, reached the foothills of Arashiyama at Ōi River, rested briefly, and he said: "The tone still hasn't improved. This is dangerous. There will likely be a great fire." They left the areas with houses and crossed north, but the tone was still the same, so he said: "This place also seems bad. There's a place I know at Atago. Guide me there." So they climbed again, and thus arrived at that temple. A monk came out and said: "You've climbed the mountain quite early," to which he replied: "Such and such circumstances have arisen." When asked "How is this place?", he responded: "This place is still not clear either. I would like to go to an even higher place."
