と言其所護摩堂あり此に行れよとありしかは
此堂に入て大によろこび扨々安堵に住せり調
子初て直りしとて唯いつまても此に居たきよ

りと仰らる愚按るに四方市の著き事賞するに
余り有既に天地の変異を知りて愛宕山にのかれし

あんなれとも是は陰極りて陽に変し陽極りて
陰を生す楽極りて哀生すといふに同しからむ

極まる所は吉であるからであろう。いつものことながら意味のない物語であると仰せになった。私が思うに、四方市の優れた能力は賞賛するに余りある。既に天地の異変を知って愛宕山に逃れたのは、もっともなことである。この山に至って音調が直ったのに、その変化もあったのであろうが、これは陰が極まって陽に変じ、陽が極まって陰を生じ、楽が極まって哀しみが生じるということと同じであろう。その頃は京都全体の大変事ゆえ、地震の気が充満して歩く道もなく逃げる場所もないという時であったので、四方市も身体がここに極まるという所ゆえ、かえってその音調が直ったのも、極めて理にかなったことに思われる。

reaches its extreme becomes good—this must be the reason. As always, this is a meaningless tale, he said. In my humble opinion, Shihōichi's remarkable abilities were beyond praise. That he already sensed the heaven and earth's calamity and fled to Mount Atago was indeed reasonable. When he reached this mountain and his tone was corrected, there may have been that change as well, but this would be the same principle as when yin reaches its extreme it transforms into yang, when yang reaches its extreme it generates yin, and when joy reaches its extreme it gives birth to sorrow. At that time, because it was a great calamity affecting all of Kyoto, the earthquake energy filled everything so that there was no road to walk on and no place to flee to. Since Shihōichi's body had also reached its extreme point, it seems perfectly reasonable that his tone was corrected instead.
