*(Continued from previous page)* — (The demon) devoured (the woman) in a single bite. She cried out "Anaya!" — that is, a startled cry of alarm *(note: "anaya" is the sound of the woman crying out "Ara!" in shock)* — but it was swallowed up by the commotion of the thunder and the man could not hear it. As dawn gradually began to break and he looked around, the woman he had brought with him was gone *(note: "iteko shi" means "the woman he had brought along")*. He stamped his feet and wept, but there was nothing to be done.

*(When you asked me, "What is that white jewel?" — I should have answered, "It is only the dew," and vanished away with it.)*
*(Note: This refers to the Nijō Consort — the subject here concerns the author, i.e., Narihira.)* — She had been in attendance, in a manner of serving, at the side of the consort's cousin, the Imperial Consort *(note: "tsukaumatsuru" means to serve or attend upon someone)*. Because she was of exceedingly beautiful appearance *(note: "medetaku" is a word of high praise)*, (Narihira) stole her away *(note: this was Narihira's doing)* and fled with her. However, her elder brother *(note: "seuto" means elder brother)*, the Lord of Horikawa — the eldest son, the Major Counsellor Kunitsune — who was at that time still of low court rank (*gerō*), happened to be on his way to the Imperial Palace *(note: "sandai" means to proceed to the palace)*, when he heard someone weeping bitterly *(note: referring to the Nijō Consort)* and, recognizing who it was, stopped them on the spot and took her back. This is what was meant by the word "demon" (*oni*) in the preceding story. It was a time when she was still very young and was simply living as the consort *(note: she had not yet entered imperial service)*, so the tale goes.

**[Section 7]**
Long ago, there was a man. Having grown unable to remain in the capital (living in wretchedness), he set out eastward toward the Azuma provinces. As he was travelling along the seacoast between Ise and Owari, he saw the waves rising brilliantly white upon the water, and—
