【Right folio, lower section】
(Continued from previous page) ...it rose to about that height. Continuing further on, between the province of Musashi and the province of Shimōsa, there was a very large river. It is called the Sumida River. Gathering together on the bank of that river, they lamented amongst themselves how very far they had come from the capital. The ferryman said, "Get on the boat quickly — the day is growing dark," so they boarded and were about to cross. Everyone felt a vague, melancholy sadness, and there was not one among them who had no one dear to them left behind in the capital. Just then, a white bird with a red beak and red legs, about the size of a snipe, was playing on the water and eating fish. Since it was a bird not seen in the capital, none of them knew what it was. When they asked the ferryman, he said, "That is what is called a 'miyako-dori' (capital bird)." Hearing this, the man composed a poem:
(From the *Kokinshū*)
(If you truly bear that name, then let me ask you, Capital Bird — does the one I long for still live in the capital, or not?)
When he recited this, everyone on the boat burst into tears.
【Section Ten】
Long ago, a man wandered all the way to the province of Musashi. There, he courted a woman who lived in that province. Her father said he intended to marry her to someone else, but her mother...
