【Right folio, lower section】 (Section Ten, continued) ...the mother had set her heart on a person of noble birth. (The annotation notes: "atena ru hito" refers to a person of high nobility; the mother thought of Narihira as a prospective son-in-law.) The father was a man of no rank, a commoner, but the mother was of Fujiwara descent. And so the mother wished to have her daughter wed to a fine man (i.e., Narihira). This prospective son-in-law sent a poem to the place where the woman lived. Her dwelling was in the district of Iruma, in the village of Miyoshino. *Miyoshino no / tanomu no kari mo / hitafuru ni / kimi ga kata ni zo / yoru to naku naru* (Even the wild geese of Miyoshino's field called "Tanomu" cry out and draw ever near to your side — so utterly devoted are they.) The prospective son-in-law's reply poem: *Waga kata ni / yoru to naku naru / Miyoshino no / tanomu no kari o / itsu ka wasuren* (How could I ever forget the geese of Miyoshino's Tanomu field, said to cry out drawing near to my side?) Thus, even while away in a distant province, his amorous pursuits never ceased. 【Section Eleven】 Long ago, when a man set out for the East, his companions sent him a poem from along the road: (From the *Shūi Wakashū*) *Wasuru na yo / hodo wa kumoi ni / nari nu tomo / sora yuku tsuki no / meguriau made* (Do not forget me — even though the distance between us grows as vast as the clouds above, until we meet again, like the moon that travels across the sky and returns.) 【Section Twelve】 Long ago, there was a man. He abducted a young woman and was on his way to take her to the Musashino plain, but as he was a thief, he was captured by the provincial governor. He left the woman in the middle of the grass and fled. People coming along the road said, "There seem to be thieves in this moor," and made to set it on fire. The woman, in great distress, (composed a poem)... --- 【Left folio, upper section】 [Various matters that those who serve at court or in a household should take to heart] Item: Near the place where one's lord is seated, one must not speak loudly, blow one's nose, or wipe away sweat. On such occasions, one should withdraw to a place out of sight to attend to oneself. Doors and *shōji* screens should be opened and closed quietly. One should take care to walk softly and not to tread on the threshold. Above all, one must be mindful of one's bearing in standing and sitting, and take great care not to appear disheveled. Item: When presenting oneself before another person, one should pay careful attention to one's hair, and it is good to lightly scent one's clothing with incense as well. However, if the scent is too strong... (continues on next page)
