現代語訳
物の珍しく、年こそ少し萎れているが、その立ち振る舞いや言葉遣いが卑しくなく野暮でもない。浅香を少し一口だけと心の内で計算して、今夜はここにお泊まりと、腰を据えての大宴会。春の夜はいっそう更けやすく、早くも九つ時（午前零時頃）に近づいた。浅香は娘が帰って来ないのを心の内で案じ悩んでいた。
結局のところ、こうして貴人がこのような草の家（粗末な家）へいらっしゃったのも娘の音勢のためなのに、今夜も帰って来ないようでは機嫌を損ねるだろうと思うと、飲んだ酒も腹に落ちず、快く酔うこともできない。ただ人に知られぬよう気を遣うのもすべて無駄なことのように夜が更けていく。
浅香は女中に言いつけて、上等な夜具を取り出させ、汚くて苦しいがこの床へお休みくださいと佐栗に相談して、表座敷に敷き延べる。綾の蒲団に緞子の横臥具。お前様はここでお休みくださいと、一間隔てた納戸には佐栗の床を敷き延べる。
吉光君は浅香の案内で表座敷に入り、蒲団の上で肘枕をして、酔ったまま寝転んだ。浅香は側に手をついて控えている。
浅香「御前様、そのままでは、お召し物が皺になり、見苦しうございます。さあさあ、これにお召し替えくださいませ。お腰なり御足なり、お揉みでもいたしましょう」と言えば、吉光は起き直り、浅香の手をひっと掴んで、
吉光「どこも揉むには及ばないから、まあここを撫でてみろ」と手を持ち添えて当てがいなさった。
