されば音勢（おとせ）が風俗（ふうぞく）の。並（なみ）に勝（すぐ）れてみえぬるはその素性（すじやう）によるものなるべし
第六 変詐（たばかり）のまき
うら若（わか）みねよげにみゆる若草（わかくさ）を。むすぶ縁（えにし）の緒（いとぐち）や。今朝（けさ）より雨（あめ）の小止（をやみ）なら。軒端（のきば）

浅香（あさか）も居（を）らず雨降（あめふり）ながら日高（ひたか）きにや。雨戸（あまど）屏風（びやうぶ）は建（たて）こめて。手元（てもと）はいとゞ暗（くら）けれど。
櫺子（れんじ）は映（かゞや）くばかりなるに。こは昨夜（ゆうべ）の労（つか）れにて。寝忘（ねわす）れたりと起（おき）あがり。手（て）をほと〳〵と
現代語訳
ばよき婿に娶わせようと思っているところに、親しい人の仲立ちがあるのを幸いに、迎えて浅香と夫婦にした。老後の安心のためにしようとしたのだが、この婿は性格がよくない者で、浅香母子はもちろんのこと、父母にも当たりが悪く、意地悪で放蕩であるため、このようでは将来収まりがたい。私の眼の黒いうちは、すべて自由にできると、父某の計らいで、この婿を離縁した。浅香も元来それほど思っていない婿のことなので、結局幸いに思った。それより後は寡婦として明け暮らすうちに、父母も次第に亡くなった。今は母子のわびしい住まい。始めの巻で言ったとおりである。
それゆえ音勢の風俗が人並み以上に優れて見えるのは、その素性によるものであろう。
第六 変詐のまき
うら若い峰のように美しく見える若草を結ぶ縁の糸口か。今朝から雨が小止みになったなら、軒端をめぐる美しい水の音が寝耳に響きながら、吉光公は目を覚ました。見ると、暁まで添い臥していた浅香もいない。雨降りながら日が高いのか、雨戸や屏風は立て込めて、手元はいっそう暗いけれど、格子は輝くばかりである。これは昨夜の疲れで寝過ごしたのだと起き上がり、手をぱちぱちと

hoping to marry her to a good son-in-law, when fortunately an acquaintance offered to serve as matchmaker, they welcomed him and made him Asaka's husband. They intended this to provide security in their old age, but this son-in-law was a man of poor character who treated not only Asaka and her child badly, but was also harsh toward her parents, being cruel and dissolute. Realizing that things could not continue peacefully this way, and that while his eyes were still black (while he was still alive), everything should be under his control, the father arranged to divorce this son-in-law. The rain shutters and folding screens are closed up, making his immediate surroundings quite dark, yet the lattice windows shine brilliantly. Thinking he had overslept due to last night's exertions, he sits up and claps his hands softly.
