大悦ひ仕居候此段御安心被遊可被下候世間は蔵なと
夥敷潰れ壁の落たるは数不知 四角（よすみ）より中迄見透
申候其外中損じは大体家並の事也端々にては
家なとも潰れ候事夥敷事なり京中に少も損不申
所と申は一家も無之候誠にビツクリ【本文ママ】の即死致候しやう
家蔵なとの下に成死し其外鳥居又は石灯籠石碑
なとの下に成即死致し候もの沢山有之怪我人難
尽筆夥敷事也身持女なと 拍子に出産致しもの
やら病人なとは日に當り死するもの夥敷事尤
時喜（じき）柄にて湯へ入居候処誠に夥敷男女ども丸のはだか
にて門江出し者なとも有之又飯椀はしなと持
其儘門へ出し者やら時刻からにて誠にいろ〳〵其後
小サなるゆりハ時々に在之所同夜四時誠に強きゆり
有之驚心痛而己二候乍去弐度メの様二は無之候今に
至り小サ成ゆり半時〳〵位に有之候年代記に八十年
前調度ヶ様之事相記し有之候御店義も二日夜ハ只々
壱人寝候者無之漸々夜八ッ半時頃に子供斗ハ臥申候
最早角前位より年行候者ハ何れも青き顔にて夜を
明し申候三日朝より町真中へ畳なとを敷き出入候者
八九文有之之尤昼夜共右之仕合誠に非人同様之訳なり

大いに喜んでおります。この点、ご安心くださいませ。世間では蔵など
おびただしく潰れ、壁の落ちたものは数知れず、四隅から中まで見通せる
ようになっております。その他、半壊は大体家並み全体のことです。端々では
家なども潰れたことがおびただしいことです。京中で少しも損傷しない
ところというのは一軒もありません。本当にびっくりして即死した者や、
家蔵などの下敷きになって死んだ者、その他鳥居または石灯籠・石碑
などの下敷きになって即死した者がたくさんおり、怪我人は筆舌に
尽くしがたいほどおびただしいことです。妊婦などが拍子に出産した者や、
病人などは日に当たって死ぬ者がおびただしいこと。もっとも
昼時分で風呂に入っていたところ、本当におびただしい男女が裸のまま
門へ飛び出した者などもおり、また飯椀や箸などを持った
そのまま門へ出た者や、時刻柄で本当にいろいろでした。その後
小さな揺れは時々あり、同夜四つ時に本当に強い揺れが
あり、驚き心を痛めるばかりでした。しかし二度目のようではありませんでした。今に
至るまで小さな揺れが30分ごと位にあります。年代記に八十年
前にちょうどこのようなことが記されてあります。お店も二日夜は
一人も寝る者がなく、ようやく夜八つ半時頃に子供だけは寝ました。
もはや大人から年配の者はいずれも青ざめた顔で夜を
明かしました。三日朝から町の真ん中へ畳などを敷いて出入りする者が
八、九分おり、もっとも昼夜ともこの有様で、本当に非人同様の状況です。

collapsed in great numbers, and walls that have fallen are countless—one can see straight through
from the four corners to the center. Other than that, partial damage is generally the case for entire rows of houses. In the outlying areas,
houses and such have also collapsed in great numbers. In all of Kyoto, there is not
a single place that sustained no damage at all. Those who died instantly from sheer shock,
those who died crushed under houses and storehouses, and others who died instantly
crushed under torii gates, stone lanterns, stone monuments
and such—there are many of them, and the injured are so
numerous as to be indescribable. Pregnant women who gave birth on the spot due to the shock,
and sick people dying from exposure to the sun—these too are countless. Moreover,
since it was the lunch hour and people were in the bath, truly countless men and women rushed
naked to their gates, and others came out to their gates
still holding rice bowls and chopsticks—given the time of day, there were truly all sorts of situations. Afterward,
small tremors occurred from time to time, and that same night at the fourth hour, there was a truly strong tremor
that caused nothing but alarm and heartache. However, it was not like the second one. Even now,
small tremors continue to occur about every half hour. In the historical records, exactly
this sort of thing is recorded as having happened eighty years ago. At our shop too, on the night of the second, not
a single person slept, and finally around half past the eighth hour of night, only the children went to bed.
All the adults and elderly had pale faces and spent the night
awake. From the morning of the third day, people have been laying out tatami mats in the middle of the street for coming and going—
about eight or nine parts of ten do this. Day and night alike, this is the situation, truly like that of outcasts.
