見えるほどに吉野の里へ雪が降った
古今集冬 志賀の山越えにて詠んだ歌 春道列樹
山川に風のかけたるしがらみは流れもあえぬ紅葉なりけり
○山川へあれ、風が持ってきてしがらみをかけたと見えるのは、流れもせずに留まっている紅葉だよ。あれは風が吹いてあまりに茂く紅葉が散って堰のようにかかって流れてくるによって、さらさらと下へ流れていかずに、あの通りにしがらみのように淀むのだ
古今集春 桜の花の散るのを詠んだ歌 紀友則
久方の光のどけき春の日に静心なく花の散るらむ
○日の光ののどかでゆったりとした春の日だというのに、どういうことで花はこのようにざわざわと落ち着きなく散ることやら

誰をかも知る人にせむ高砂の松も昔の友ならなくに
○俺はこのようにきつく年が寄って今ではもう同じ頃合いの友も亡くなったが、誰をまあ相手にしようか。山の上の松が年久しい物であれど、それも昔からの友ではなければ相手にはならない。もう松より外に俺がくらい年経た物はとんとない
古今集春 初瀬に参るごとに宿りけれる人の家に久しく宿らで程経て後に至りけれぱ、かの家のあるじが「確かになん宿りはある」と言い出して侍りければ、そこに立てりける梅の花を折りて詠んだ歌 紀貫之

On the mountain stream / the barrier that wind has built / consists of autumn leaves / too thick to flow away
○What appears to be a barrier that the wind has brought and set up in the mountain stream are autumn leaves that remain there without flowing away. The wind has blown so densely that the fallen autumn leaves pile up like a dam and flow along, but instead of flowing smoothly downstream, they accumulate and stagnate like a barrier.

On this spring day / when heaven's light shines / gently and calmly / why do the blossoms fall / with such restless hearts?
○On a spring day when the sunlight is gentle and leisurely, for what reason do the flowers scatter in this restless, unsettled manner?

Whom shall I make / my intimate friend? / Even the pine of Takasago / is not a companion from the old days
○I have grown so very old that now all my contemporaries have died, but who shall I befriend? Though the pine on the mountain is ancient, it too is not a friend from the old days and cannot be a companion. There is scarcely anything other than pines that has aged as much as I have.
From Kokinshū, Spring section, composed when visiting someone's house where he used to lodge whenever going to Hatsuse, but after a long time without staying there, when he finally arrived, the master of the house said "Certainly your lodging is still here," so he picked a plum blossom growing there and composed this poem Ki no Tsurayuki
I cannot tell / what people's hearts may hold / but in this old village / the flowers still give off / the same fragrance as before
