○初祖達磨は梁の武帝に謁見し、江を渡って魏の少林寺に入られた。世に芦葉の達磨とも、また一葦の達磨ともいう。
○不動明王は右手に利剣を持ち、左手に縛の縄を持たれているのは、衆生の邪悪を戒められる姿であろう。後ろの炎は動じない形であり、また凡人の怒りの様子を表し示されているのであろう。

○龍猛菩薩は南天竺に出生し、釈尊より八百年後である。真言宗第一の祖である。大日経、金剛頂経、蘇悉地経を弘められた。
○善導大師は唐土長安の滝より出現された。三十余年少しも睡眠せず、唐の永隆二年三月十四日に遷化された。
○天台大師は陳・隋二代の国師で、唐土天台宗の開祖である。十一月二十四日、六十歳で入滅された。智者大師ともいう。

○The First Patriarch Daruma met with Emperor Wu of Liang, crossed the river, and entered Shaolin Temple in Wei. He is known to the world as "Daruma of the Reed Leaf" or "Daruma of One Reed."
○Fudo Myo-o holds a sharp sword in his right hand and a binding rope in his left hand, which represents his form of admonishing the evil in sentient beings. The flames behind him maintain an unmovable form, and also express and demonstrate the appearance of anger in ordinary people.

○Bodhisattva Nagarjuna was born in South India, eight hundred years after Shakyamuni. He is the first patriarch of the Shingon sect. He propagated the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasekhara Sutra, and Susiddhi Sutra.
○Master Shandao appeared from a waterfall in Chang'an, China. For over thirty years he never slept at all, and passed away on March 14th in the second year of Yonglong of Tang.
○Master Tiantai was the national teacher of both the Chen and Sui dynasties, and the founding patriarch of the Tiantai sect in China. He entered nirvana on November 24th at the age of sixty. He is also called Master Zhizhe.
