○弓は射芸という。武士の家に生まれる人は射芸を学ばなければならない。武士を弓執とはいうのである。中国に楊由基という弓の達人がいて、百歩下がって柳の葉を射るのに、一葉も射損じることがなかったという。我が朝においては鎮西為朝、能登守教経、那須与一等が弓の達人である。その他数多の精兵が射手であった。

○馬は乗馬の法である。これは武士の要道であるから、師伝を受けて習うべきことが肝要である。巧者・無功者によって駿馬でも悪い癖が出るものである。その種類は百癖ありという。馬の仕込みや癖の直し方に法式があって、昔より八乗流がある。今世では大坪の一流を専らに用いて武士の要道とする。高山の険阻もたやすく登り、大河を渡すのも、これはみな駿馬の徳である。

○The bow is called the art of archery. Those born into samurai families must learn the art of archery. Samurai are called "bow-bearers" (yumitori). In China, there was a master archer named Yang Youji who could step back a hundred paces and shoot willow leaves without missing a single leaf. In our country, Chinzei Tametomo, Noto-no-kami Noritsune, Nasu-no-Yoichi, and others were master archers. Besides these, there were many other skilled warriors who were expert shooters.

○The horse refers to the methods of horsemanship. Since this is an essential way for warriors, it is crucial to receive instruction from a master and learn properly. Depending on whether the trainer is skilled or unskilled, even a fine horse can develop bad habits. It is said there are a hundred different kinds of such habits. There are established methods for training horses and correcting their bad habits, and since ancient times there have been eight riding schools. In the present age, the Otsubo school is primarily employed as the essential way for warriors. Easily climbing steep mountain precipices and crossing great rivers - all of this is due to the virtue of fine horses.
