○狐（きつね）は狗（いぬ）に似（に）て
鼻（はな）とかり尾（お）大（おほい）
なり昼（ひる）はかくれ
夜出（よるいづ）る馬骨（ばこつ）を
くはへて吹（ふけ）ば光（ひかり）を出（いだ）
し食（しよく）を求（もと）む是（これ）
を狐火（きつねび）といふ又／玉（たま）を

○狐は犬に似ているが
鼻が尖っており尾が大きい。
昼は隠れて
夜に出てくる。馬の骨を
くわえて吹くと光を出し
て食べ物を求める。これを
狐火という。また玉を
くわえて光を出すとも
言う。百歳を経て
北斗七星を拝んで化けると
言われている。
○猫の瞳は子午卯酉
（ねうまうとり）の時刻には糸のように細く、
寅申巳亥（とらさるみい）の時刻には満月の
ように丸く、丑未辰戌（うしひつじたついぬ）の時刻に

は棗の種のような形である。鼻は
常に冷たい。夏至の
一日だけ温かくなる。
○狸には虎狸があり、猫
狸がある。猫狸は臭くて
食べてはいけない。頭が尖り
口が四角いものを虎狸という。
○貉は狐狸に似て
いる。毛は黄色で褐色
である。よく眠り、昼は
伏していて夜に出てくる。
○貒は犬に似ていて口が
尖り、足が黒く毛は褐色
である。尾と足が短く
歩くのが遅い。耳が
聞こえず人を恐れる。

【Right page, upper section】
○The fox resembles a dog but
has a pointed nose and large tail.
It hides during the day
and comes out at night. When it holds
horse bones in its mouth and blows, it emits light
to seek food. This is called
fox fire. It is also said that it holds
a jewel in its mouth to create light.
It is said that after living a hundred years,
it worships the Big Dipper and
gains transformative powers.
○The cat's pupils are like thread during
the hours of ne-uma-u-tori
(rat-horse-rabbit-rooster), like a full moon during
the hours of tora-saru-mi-i (tiger-monkey-snake-boar),

and like jujube seeds during the hours of ushi-hitsuji-tatsu-inu
(ox-sheep-dragon-dog). The nose is
always cold. Only on the day of
summer solstice does it become warm.
○Among tanuki, there are kori and cat-
tanuki. Cat-tanuki smell bad and
should not be eaten. Those with pointed heads
and square mouths are called kori.
○Kaku resembles
fox-tanuki. Its fur is yellow and
brownish in color. It sleeps well, lies down during the day
and comes out at night.
○Tan resembles a dog with a pointed
mouth, black feet, and brownish
fur. Its tail and legs are short,
and it walks slowly. Its ears are
deaf and it fears humans.
