を捕るのである。
○雀鷂（エツサイ）、雀鸇（サシバ）はいずれも鷹の名で、小鳥を捕る。鷹の種類は四十八ある。鳶・鵙・梟を加えて四十八種とした。しかしながら、狩猟に用いる鷹は、その飼い主が名付けるものがある。また昔から名誉ある鷹には、すべて特別な名前がある。また異国から渡来した鷹には特殊な種類が特にあるはずである。

○Sparrowhawk (etsusai) and honey buzzard (sashiba) are both names of hawks that catch small birds. There are forty-eight varieties of hawks. Adding kites, shrikes, and owls makes forty-eight species. However, hawks used for hunting are given names by their keepers. Also, famous hawks from ancient times all have special names. Moreover, hawks that came from foreign countries must have particularly unique varieties.

Chinese hawks, Korean hawks, southern barbarian hawks, Ryukyu hawks - even within Japan, there are differences between those from the eastern provinces, western provinces, northern provinces, Shikoku, Chugoku, and Tsukushi. A hawk's wing feathers number twenty-four per wing, forty-eight for both wings combined, and the tail has twelve feathers. Each has a name. An eagle's tail has fourteen feathers.
