○躑躅（ツツジ）は種類が多い。紫花は2月に花が咲く。赤ツツジは3月に花が咲く。レンゲツツジは少し遅く、花が大きくて見事である。霧島ツツジは花が濃い紅色で美しい。モチツツジは薄紫で4月に花が咲く。リュウキュウツツジは白花と紫がある。花が大きくて遅い。サツキ花は5月に花が咲き、紅紫または白紅が交じり、種々ある。

○辛荑（コブシ）は葉が細く長い。花は白くて少し赤みがある。花を木筆花という。春に花が咲く。
○木蘭（モクラン）は香蘭に似て、花は蓮のようで内側が白く外側が紫である。花を木蓮花という。
○厚朴（コウボク）は春に葉を生やし、四季を通じて枯れない。花は紅色で実は青い。一名を榛という。

○Azalea (tsutsuji) has many varieties. Purple-flowered ones bloom in February. Red azaleas bloom in March. Rhododendron (renge-tsutsuji) blooms a little later, with large and magnificent flowers. Kirishima azaleas have deep red flowers and are beautiful. Sticky azaleas (mochi-tsutsuji) are light purple and bloom in April. Ryukyu azaleas have both white and purple flowers. The flowers are large and bloom late. Satsuki flowers bloom in May in red-purple or mixed white and red, with various types.

○Kobushi magnolia has narrow, long leaves. The flowers are white with a slight reddish tinge. The flower is called mokuhitsuka. It blooms in spring.
○Magnolia (mokuran) resembles kōran, with lotus-like flowers that are white inside and purple outside. The flower is called mokurenka.
○Japanese big-leaf magnolia (kōboku) produces leaves in spring and does not wither throughout the four seasons. The flowers are red and the fruit is blue-green. It is also called shin.
