○ムクゲは芙蓉の花に似ているが小さい。薄紅色と白色がある。八重咲きと一重咲きがある。7月に花が咲く。別名を日及という。
○芙蓉は水に生えるものを水芙蓉といい、これは蓮花である。木に咲くものを木芙蓉という。キバチスともいう。7～8月に花が開く。

○クサギは秋に紫の花が咲く。花の中に黒い実がある。根を常山という。6月頃に葉を取って食べるが、毒があるともいう。
○ネズモチは冬を耐えしのいで枯れない。そのため女性の貞節に例えて名付けられた。別名を蝋樹という。
○モチノキは冬月でも青々と緑である。そのため冬青という。葉は少し丸い。

○Rose of Sharon (mukuge) resembles hibiscus flowers but is smaller. It comes in light red and white colors. There are both double and single-flowered varieties. It blooms in July. It is also called nikkyū.
○Hibiscus that grows in water is called water hibiscus, which is the lotus flower. The tree variety is called tree hibiscus. It is also called kibachisu. The flowers open in July and August.

○Clerodendrum (kusagi) blooms with purple flowers in autumn. There are black fruits within the flowers. The root is called jōzan. Around June, the leaves are picked and eaten, though some say they are poisonous.
○Privet (nezumochi) endures winter without withering. Therefore, it was named in comparison to women's chastity. It is also called rōju (wax tree).
○Japanese holly (mochinoki) remains green even in winter months. Therefore it is called tōsei (winter green). The leaves are somewhat round.
