【右頁上段】
○シュロ（棕櫚）は6～7月に黄白色の花が咲き、8～9月に実を結ぶ。形は魚の卵のようである。この木の繊維で箒を作る。
○ツゲ（黄楊）は葉が細かくて硬い。花は咲かず実もならない。四季を通して枯れることがない。木目が細かくて硬く、色は黄色である。

○ニシキギ（衛矛）は3月に茎を生やす。高さは3～4尺ほどである。秋の終わりに紅葉する。茎に矢の羽のようなものがある。今でいうニシキギである。別名を鬼箭という。
○ソテツ（鐵蕉）は蘇鉄のことである。別名を鳳尾焦という。琉球から来るものを番焦と呼ぶ。

○Trachycarpus palm (shuro) blooms with yellowish-white flowers in June-July and bears fruit in August-September. The shape resembles fish roe. Brooms are made from the fiber of this tree.
○Japanese boxwood (tsuge) has fine, hard leaves. It does not bloom or bear fruit. It does not wither throughout the four seasons. The wood grain is fine and hard, and the color is yellow.

○Winged spindle tree (kusomayumi) produces stems in March. The height is about 3-4 shaku. It turns red in late autumn. The stems have wing-like projections resembling arrow feathers. This is what we now call nishikigi. Another name is kisen (demon arrow).
○Cycas (tetsushō) is the sago palm (sotetsu). Another name is hōbiseu (phoenix tail burnt). Those from Ryukyu are called banshō.
