そこで素戔嗚尊は出雲国に流され給うた。ここに海上に浮かんで流れている島があり、尊が御手でなでて留めて住み給うた。田島と申すのがこれである。ここにいて遥かに見渡し給うと、菅の里の奥、樋川上という所に八色の雲が立った。尊は不思議に思われて行って御覧になると、翁と嫗の二人が美しい乙女を中に置いて、泣き悲しむことが切ないほどであった。尊は哀れに思われ、どのような理由でそのように嘆くのかとお尋ねになったところ、翁と嫗は答えて

Thus, Susanoo-no-Mikoto was banished to Izumo Province. Here there was an island floating and drifting on the sea, which the deity touched with his divine hand to stop and made his dwelling. The deity found this strange and went to see, whereupon he found an old man and old woman with a beautiful maiden between them, weeping and lamenting most pitifully. saying: "The old man is called Tenazuchi and the old woman Ashinazuchi, and we are husband and wife. This maiden here is our only daughter, who has already reached eighteen years of age this year. Her name is Inada-hime. In this area there is something called the Yamada no Orochi, a great serpent with eight heads that crawls across seven valleys in the mountain depths, and every night it devours people as food. Year after year people have been devoured - parents grieve as their children die before them, and children lament as they are left behind by their parents.
