さてしまねみのみこと一千の神
たちをかたらひてやまとのくにあま
のかくやまににはびをたき一めん
のかゝみをいさせ給ふ此かゝみはおもふ
やうにもなしとてすてられぬい
まのきしうにちせんくうのしんたい
これなりつぎにいたまひしかゝみ
こそよかるへしとてさかきのえた
につけて一千のかみたちをせうじ【招じ】
てうしをそろへかみうたをうたひ
給ひけれは天しやう大しんこれに
めて給ひていはねたちからをのみこと
にあまのいはとをすこしひらかせて

たちまちあきらかになりてかゝみ
にうつらせたまへる御かたちなかく
きえたまはすこのかゝみをなつけて
やたのかゝみとも又はないしところとも
かしこ所とも申なり天しやう大じん

のちやをよろつのかみたちをつかはし
うだのゝじやうにほりたてたる
一千のつるぎをみなけやぶつてすて
たまふこれよりしてちはやふるとは

さて思兼命は一千の神たちと相談して、大和国の天の香久山で庭火を焚き、一面の鏡を作らせ給うた。この鏡は思うようにならないとして捨てられた。今の紀州の千手観音の神体がこれである。次に作られた鏡こそが良いだろうとして、榊の枝に付けて一千の神たちを招集し、雅楽を揃え、神歌を歌い給ったところ、天照大神はこれに心を動かされ給い、手力男命に天の岩戸を少し開かせて、

御顔をお出しになられたので、世界はたちまち明るくなり、鏡に映られた御姿は永く消え給わず、この鏡を名付けて八咫鏡とも、また内侍所とも、畏き所とも申し上げるのである。天照大神が天の岩戸から出られ給った後、八百万の神たちを遣わして、宇陀の城に掘り立てた一千の剣をすべて蹴り破って捨て給う。これより「ちはやふる」と申し継がれるのである。この時、一千の悪人は騒ぎとなって消え去ったのであった。

Then Omoikane-no-Mikoto consulted with a thousand deities and had them light ceremonial fires on Mount Kagu in Yamato Province and forge a single large mirror. This mirror was discarded as it did not turn out as intended. This became the sacred body of the Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara) in present-day Kii Province. Thinking that the next mirror made would surely be good, they attached it to a sakaki branch, summoned a thousand deities, arranged court music, and sang sacred songs. Amaterasu Omikami was moved by this and had Tajikarao-no-Mikoto open the heavenly rock cave slightly,

and when she showed her face, the world immediately became bright. Her divine form reflected in the mirror never faded, and this mirror came to be called Yata-no-Kagami (Eight-Span Mirror), or also Naishidokoro (Inner Palace Sanctuary), or Kashikodokoro (Place of Awe). After Amaterasu Omikami emerged from the heavenly rock cave, she sent the eight million deities to kick apart and discard all the thousand swords that had been planted upright at the fortress in Uda. From this time, the phrase "chihayafuru" (mighty, divine) came to be passed down. At this time, the thousand evil men became mere disturbance and vanished.
