すると火闌降命は並々ならぬお怒りで、「その釣り針というのは昔から伝わって大切にしてきた宝物である。急いで探し求めて返すがよい」とおっしゃった。すると弟の命は「私はその釣り針をそのように大切になさっているとは思いもよらず、軽い気持ちで釣りをしていましたところ、魚に取られてしまいました。どうしようもなく、今は探すところもありません。代わりの品を差し上げましょう。それでお許しください」とおっしゃったが、また

兄の命がおっしゃるには、「たとえ百千万の代わりの品をもらったとしても、あの釣り針には比べられない。我が身に代えても惜しい宝物なのだから、なおさらそのように思うのだ。魚が取って失くした事ならば、天にも上るまい、地にも入るまい、海の波の底にこそあるだろう。お前が海に入って速やかに探して返せ」と。「この釣り針をお返しできないならば、父の帝が譲られたこの葦原中国を治めることはできないであろう」とおっしゃった。
