In other books, it is mostly called "pox disease" and not "smallpox." The "Treatise on the Origins and Symptoms of Various Diseases" mentions "seasonal qi pustular epidemic pestilence." The "Complete Records of Sacred Remedies" also uses the term "pustular pox" and does not say "smallpox." The "Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library" was the first to use the term "pea smallpox." In our country, during the reign of the 45th Human Emperor, Emperor Shomu, in the 8th year of Tempyo, the year of hinoe-ne (736 CE), people from Tsukushi drifted to the kingdom of Silla and first became infected with this disease, bringing it back, after which it spread throughout Japan. Kaibara's "Origins of Japanese Affairs" also states that during Emperor Shomu's reign, Buddhism was greatly revered, but without merit from this, the imperial lineage came to an end, and moreover, a strange disease...
