神国の人に伝へて万世諸人の憂となり侍るあさましき
事ならすや朝鮮の南秋江か著したる鬼神論に瘡疹の
病は鬼神の致す所とありしより神道者の説には神
国にもとなき病なるを聖武天皇の御時新羅国より
そみ来て日本に流布す住吉大神は三韓降伏の神なる
ゆへ此病にかきり住吉大神を祭りいのるゆへ痘神と
云も理有に似たれとも誣たる説ならむと貝原氏も記されたり
しかし預防の術も有へきにや予か伯母知多郡へ嫁して
其家医にして農なるゆへ菉豆をうへてある人の菉豆は
痘毒を解すといふを聞及ひ年々菉豆をたへられし故
にや八十余歳にて身まかられしか一生疱瘡をやます伯母
常に其事を予に告て存生の中年々菉豆を贈り越さ
現代語訳
神国の人に伝えて、万代にわたって諸人の憂いとなっていることは、なんと浅ましいことではないか。朝鮮の南秋江が著した『鬼神論』に、疱瘡の病は鬼神の引き起こすところであるとあったことから、神道者の説では、神国（日本）にもともとなかった病気であるのに、聖武天皇の御代に新羅国から感染して来て日本に広まった。住吉大神は三韓降伏の神であるため、この病気に限って住吉大神を祭り祈るので、痘神というのも理にかなっているように見えるが、間違った説であろうと貝原氏も記している。
しかし予防の術もあるべきであろうか。私の伯母は知多郡へ嫁いで、その家は医者で農業もしているため、緑豆を植えてあった。ある人が「緑豆は痘毒を解毒する」と言うのを聞き及んで、年々緑豆を絶やさなかったためであろうか、八十余歳で亡くなったが、一生疱瘡にかからなかった。伯母は常にその事を私に話して、生存中は年々緑豆を贈り続けてくれた。

It is transmitted to the people of the divine land (Japan), becoming a source of worry for all people for ten thousand generations - what a deplorable thing this is! From the Korean scholar Nam Chu-gang's work "Theory of Demons and Spirits," which stated that smallpox is caused by demons and spirits, Shinto scholars argue that this disease, which did not originally exist in the divine land, was brought from the Silla kingdom during Emperor Shomu's reign and spread throughout Japan. Since Sumiyoshi Ōkami is the deity who subjugated the three Korean kingdoms, people pray specifically to Sumiyoshi Ōkami for this disease, so calling it the "smallpox deity" seems reasonable, but Kaibara also noted that this is likely a false explanation.
However, there should be methods of prevention. My aunt married into the Chita district, and since that household practiced both medicine and farming, they cultivated mung beans. Having heard someone say that "mung beans neutralize smallpox poison," she never failed to grow mung beans year after year. Perhaps because of this, although she lived to over eighty years old, she never contracted smallpox in her entire life. My aunt constantly told me about this matter and continued to send me mung beans every year while she was alive.
