れて予にたへさせられしか予三十歳に及ふ此まて年々菉
菉豆をたへしにや今年六十九歳になれといまた疱瘡を
やます此ころ雨の夜或人来りて疱瘡流行により預防
稀痘の方を尋求られしゆへ手近き書に出たるを語
り侍れは願くは梓に上せて保赤の一助にそへしとある
にまかせとり敢す小冊にし雨夜談と号すと云爾

現代語訳

れて私に絶やさせなかったが、私が三十歳に及ぶこの間まで年々緑豆を絶やさなかったためであろうか、今年六十九歳になったが、いまだに疱瘡にかからない。このごろ雨の夜に、ある人が来て疱瘡の流行により予防・種痘の方法を尋ね求められたので、手近にある書物に出ているものを語って差し上げた。すると「願わくはこれを出版して、幼児保護の一助に加えてほしい」とあるのに従って、急いで小冊子にし、『雨夜談』と題したということである。

And so I never let the supply run out. Having continued to consume mung beans year after year until I reached thirty years of age, perhaps because of this, although I am now sixty-nine years old, I still have not contracted smallpox. Recently, on a rainy night, someone came and asked me about methods of prevention and variolation due to the epidemic of smallpox, so I told him what appeared in books I had at hand. He then said, "I wish you would publish this to serve as an aid in protecting infants," so following his suggestion, I hastily compiled this small booklet and titled it "Rainy Night Tales."
