現代語訳
安政2年（1855年）10月2日の夜、四つ時（午後10時頃）を過ぎたころ、突然大地震が揺れ始め、江戸四里四方はいうまでもなく、その外の各地の村々に至るまで、あちこちで建物が大きく倒壊した。その後、各所から火の手が上がり、武家屋敷をはじめ寺院・町屋・土蔵などが大きく損壊し、死者・けが人の数はわかりきれないほどであった。天災とはいいながら、人々は非常事態の恐怖を覚え、皆が野宿をして夜の明けるのを待ち、翌朝五つ時（午前8時頃）になって各所の火がおさまり、初めて心を落ち着かせたのであった。

On the night of the 2nd day of the 10th month of Ansei 2nd year (November 11, 1855), past the Hour of the Four (around 10 PM), a great earthquake suddenly began to shake the land. Within a four-ri radius of Edo — to say nothing of the city itself — villages and settlements throughout the surrounding areas suffered widespread destruction. Afterward, fires broke out in various locations, causing severe damage to samurai residences, temples, townspeople's houses, storehouses, and other structures. The number of dead and injured was beyond counting. Though it was a natural disaster, people were overcome with feelings of sudden and desperate crisis; all took to sleeping outdoors, waiting for the night to give way to dawn. The following morning, at the Hour of the Five (around 8 AM), the fires throughout the various districts finally began to die down, and only then were people able to find some peace of mind.
