さて、お六の方では約束なので、その夜は桃太郎が忍んで来るだろうと、酒肴などを取り揃えて待てども待てども来ない。例えの通り人を待つほどつらいものはない。「こんなに待ちくたびれているのに、早く来てくれればいいのに」。そうすればいいのに、ひょっと今にでも来たらどうして言おうかと、うっとりとなって待ち暮らしても桃太郎が来ないのは当然のこと。男の方でも今夜はお六が忍んで来るつもりで酒肴を用意して（同じように）待っている。五位鷺が言ったことなのでまさか間違いはあるまいと思っている。

もう夜が更けて苦しい分だと、縁先へ立ち出て表の方を見上がったり下がったりして首を長くしたり引っ込めたりして待ちこがれていると、お六も我知らずに首を長くして待っていた。お互いに待ちたくて、早く会いたい、見たいと思う一念で、ずるずると首が伸び、途中でばったりと行き会った。

With both of them wanting to wait and eager to meet and see each other soon, their single-minded desire made their necks stretch longer and longer until they bumped into each other midway.
