桃太郎は五位鷺の世話で首が長くなったので、これより見越入道となり、久しぶりに父の桃ん爺に会ったところ、桃ん爺は大変喜んで「わが借り初めの歌がいより、母親とともに年月苦労をさせたことは不憫であった。かかる老い先を見る上は、わが跡式を譲り与えよう」と化け様の伝授をことごとく教えて、行く末長く栄えた。

さても見越入道は化け様の伝授をことごとく譲られ、いよいよ仲間の用いもよく、ことにこの手やいの総お頭となり、もっぱら化け道を励んだので、国々の化け物共が追い追いに馳せ集まり、見越が弟子となった。この頃は野も山も一面に生臭い風が吹いて、皆色々の化け物が馳せ集まると見えた。
♪こうしたところは芝居の羅漢というのと見えた

Since Momotaro's neck had grown long through the gray heron's intervention, he became a mikoshi-nyudo (a neck-stretching specter). When he met his father Momon-jii after a long time, Momon-jii was overjoyed and said, "Ever since my first borrowing song, you and your mother have suffered through the years, which was pitiful. Now that I see my old age approaching, I shall pass on my hereditary position to you." He taught him all the secrets of shape-shifting, and [Momotaro's lineage] prospered for ages to come.

Now the mikoshi-nyudo received complete instruction in the arts of transformation and became increasingly useful to his fellows. In particular, he became the chief leader of this group and devoted himself entirely to the way of shape-shifting. Monsters from various provinces gradually flocked to him and became mikoshi's disciples. Recently, both fields and mountains were filled with a fishy wind, and it seemed that various monsters of all kinds were gathering together.
