ろくろ首は三つ目入道と一緒に駆け落ちをしたいと思っているが、縛られているので自由になれない。その上、奴のどて平が見張り番をしているので、身動きすることもできず、色々と思い悩んでいるところ、どて平の外では三つ目入道が待ちくたびれて、合図の小石を投げかけたり、咳払いをしたりしている。

いくら待っても返事がないので、あまりに待ちくたびれて首を長々と伸ばしたため、ついに見つかってしまい、散々な目に遭った。ろくろ首も色々と心を焦らし、我を忘れて縄を食い切ろうという気持ちで、自分の首で縄を食い切り、「やれ嬉しや」と駆け出したところが、肝心の首がない。なんということだ。
