【右頁上段】
桃太郎はそれから人に河童だと思わせて怖がられるつもりで、川端で遊んでいたところ、川の中から本当の河童が現れて、「俺の縄張りに来て働く奴はどこの奴だ」とひっつかんで見たところ、人間だったので、その河童は大いに喜び、さっそくお尻を奪おうとするところへ、五位鷺が飛んできて河童をなめて、桃太郎の身の上を聞く。

五位鷺はかねてから物の怪と心安い仲だったので、このことも聞いていた事なので、桃太郎の世話をして育て上げ、化け物の仲間にも入れて、いろいろと心を添えて化け方の工夫をさせた。もはやずる賢い男一匹となったので、いざ山奥へ連れて行き、そのまま髪も剃らず、湯水も使わず、いきなり山暴しをしておいたら、きっと化け物のようになりそうなものだと同道して山深く連れて行った。

From then on, Momotaro intended to make people think he was a kappa and frighten them, so he was playing by the riverbank. A real kappa emerged from the river and grabbed him, saying "What kind of guy is this, coming to work in my territory?" When he saw it was a human, the kappa was greatly delighted and immediately tried to steal his buttocks. Just then, a night heron flew over, licked the kappa, and inquired about Momotaro's circumstances.
