ここに三つ目入道という者がいた。娘のお六は幼い時から癇癪持ち（ひきつけを起こす性質）で、物事に驚いてびっくりするたびに首を引っ込ませていたため、いつの間にか引っ込みっぱなしになってしまった。生まれつきのろくろ首の、引っ込め癖のある首となって、全く伸びずに引っ込みっぱなしになってしまったので、父親の三つ目入道は大いに嘆いていた。結局、娘がろくろ首になれば化け物になれるが、首が伸びなければ普通の人間である。婿を取ろうと言っても、満足でない娘では良い者は来ないし、嫁にやろうと言っても...

この娘は器量が良くて申し分のない向きの者なので、さっそくもらい手もなくはないが、さりとては厄介者である。この首が金づくで伸びるようなものなら、新しょう（薬）を買い求めても治したいと、多くの医者へ相談して治療に手を尽くすと言えども、さらに効果は見えなかった。

Here there was a being called Mitsume Nyudo (Three-Eyed Priest). His daughter Oroku had been prone to fits and convulsions since childhood, and every time she was startled or surprised by something, she would pull her neck in. Eventually, her neck became permanently retracted. Born with the nature of a rokurokubi but with a habit of retracting her neck, it wouldn't extend at all and remained completely withdrawn. Her father, Mitsume Nyudo, was greatly distressed by this. After all, if his daughter could become a proper rokurokubi, she could be a real monster, but with a neck that won't extend, she's just an ordinary human. Even if they wanted to find her a husband, no good man would come for such an imperfect daughter, and even if they wanted to marry her off...
